The Stylish Starfish

HEY YOU! Yeah, you.
This is my classy girl outfit. Otherwise known to my roommate as my "substitute teacher" outfit. I usually pull this outfit out after a month of being janky or when I decided enough was enough when it came to wearing my beloved sweats.

The look itself is Prim+Proper and is definitely my power look. Just ignore that unintentional ombre I have going in my hair. I attribute that to my laziness to get my hair dyed. Good thing it's a trend, I suppose.

N. Jeffery

I'm a tiny girl with a loud mouth. I love to surround myself with Korean things and my boyfriend. SUMS ME UP, now let's take a better look at who I am....

(FYI: All of my pictures were taken from my instagram and I take LOTS of pictures. If you want to see my life through photos follow me! My username is nikobelle.)
Here we have exhibit A. My most recent photo of me where my eyebrows don't look completely pasted on. It's funny how much 1 year can change you... I've gone from long hair, to red hair, to dark brown hair, to short hair and now this! Stuck at a mid-length phase. Summer is approaching and all I literally want to do is go bald, but I'm not.
On to the next one!

We now come to our second photo. This here is the love of my life. Corny as it sounds, he's proven to be worthy enough of my love. Wow, no totally kidding. In fact, it's quite the opposite. He swept me off my feet with his stupidity and constantly keeps me smiling. He's absolutely perfect. And he loves Pokemon. Am I a winner now? Maybe............

Next topic: Big Bang. Words cannot describe how much of a fan, VIP, stan (stalker fan), or anything other type of noun to explain what kind of a person I am towards them. I'M OBSESSED. It's only been a year since I've really enjoyed their company in my life...but my life has literally changed forever. Don't worry, there will be only ONE post for me to vent out all my glorious feelings about them and the Korean culture in general. But because this blog is mainly dedicated to fashion, makeup, foods, etc. and it isn't a Korean blog...I'll spare you viewers.

Here we have my best friend. You guys have already read about how hipster she is and blah blah blah. But let's just say I found my soul cat. And there is nothing more to describe what our relationship is like. Instead, I'll put a quote:
*As I walk up to the door of her apartment, I meow very loudly*
Me: MEEOOOOWWW
Marina (Christine's roomie): Christine, I think you're friend is here
Christine: Friend? DON'T YOU MEAN FAMILY
*Christine opens the door as I have this stupid looking face on*
The both of us in our deep set voices: MEEOOOOOWWWWWW

Another aspect of my college life: my fraternity Delta Nu Tau. This picture was taken during the Zeta Class pledge pinning so of course not everyone is present and as you can tell, we're not a sorority so the lovely DNT gentlemen were not present. I'm so grateful to be a part of an inspiring organization who strive to help and educate everyone and each other in the pursuit of the dentistry field. You're looking at your future dentists ya'll! Ain't we bootyful!

One of my favorite sports, possibly my only favorite sport is hockey. The San Jose Sharks is the team I will die for and never look back on! When I have the time, I'll hopefully get to do weekend caps on my adventures in SJ and you'll definitely see pictures from the games I attend! By the way, could you tell I'm crazy for the sport? And we murdered the Vancouver Canucks. Hence the royal blue blood dripping from the shark mouth painted on my face.

Lastly, I love makeup. It's a hobby I slowly started to pick up since middle school and although my collection of makeup is not the biggest, I am definitely one of those people who have a lot of products that are not being used. My blog posts will feature plenty of makeup tips, tricks, and how-to's! Be on the look out for all of them. And if by chance I'm in no need of a particular makeup product, or I just never got around to using it, I'll keep everyone posted on what I'll be selling.

I wanted to thank you for taking the time to read a little about my life. Could you believe I condensed this a lot? I can't wait to write my autobiography, ha!

Nicole

P.S. Bear with me and my unskilled html. Until we can afford someone to make this pretty, this style will have to do!

Only 18

Flowers blooming, bees buzzing, and finals right around the corner; let me welcome you to the spring semester of my freshman year. During that time, Christine and I were bored out of our minds studying for midterms and trying to cram everything into our brains. All of the things that we were learning started to sound like "blah, blah, blah, blah". And like usual, she came into my room to bother me as I clicked away at my Tumblr. She had this grand announcement of a contest that she wanted us to enter where the grand prize was an Ipad. I was like, "Ipad!?" and she nodded a satisfied "yes!!!" I was totally in.

The contest was for an up and coming online clothing store. The only rules for the contest were to take a photo of yourself with a product from their store or to dress fashionable with the store in mind. And of course, harass your dorm building mates to vote for you.  I thought to myself, "How hard could that be?"

So with a borrowed camera and with camera-woman/stylist Christine, we crammed a photo shoot on our campus within a span of 3 hours. Not too shabby for amateurs at all!

The next step was pleading and begging for votes, which we did for a month straight. Constantly parading around each dorm that we had access too and asking (forcing) our fellow freshman to vote for us.

So you're probably wondering if we won or not. We didn't. BUT my excuse is that we had finals to study for and got super lazy about asking for votes. But nonetheless, here are the leftovers from the days that we were 18 years old. On the plus side, the outfits don't look ancient at all!

Making Hips Stir Since 2010
Christine: I basically took my inner hipster and threw it up on Nicole. That poor girl. But here were the results of what I would like to call "not appropriate for school or work"; complete with the hipster trademark at the time, the beanie, while paired with upcoming trend of corsets.

Child's Play
Christine: I aimed for something a little more whimsical with this outfit. I wanted a touch of childhood with an Alice in Wonderland feel and a dash of a modern touch. Thinking about it now, it would be a perfect outfit for a music festival or a carnival!

Sasha Not-So-Fierce
Christine: I believe this is when I started to experiment more with more "hardcore" & "edgy" pieces. Me? Hardcore? Ha! The pleather jacket definitely toughens up the look, along with Nicole's expressions of "take me seriously."With the tank top and heels, the outfit still remains girly and feminine.

The Starlet
Christine: This has to be my absolutely favorite look. The lighting was awesome. The poses were awesome. The entire composition, I feel like, really draws you in. And of course, the awkwardness of taking these photos were awesome as well.

For you guys that attend the same university as Nicole and I, you may recognize the location to be the bathroom of the cafeteria. I have no shame in picking this place, seeing that it is the most beautiful bathroom in the entire campus. I have no doubts that the mood lighting, clean stalls, fancy sinks are all apart of the university's scheme to lure naive potential students and parents alike to pay thousands of dollars for an education here.

I hope that you guys enjoyed this throwback into our past of when we thought we were so cool for being the dynamic duo that strutted around campus, lugging around accessories and clothes with a huge camera; cause nothing says "cool freshman" like two science majors running around like we worked for Vogue.

Christine's Make up Basics

What was I like in middle school and high school? That's right folks. Awkward and gawky as f$%!. Maybe it was the transition from child to teenager that I never really truly grasped the concept of, but it was definitely a learning process to be the person that I am today, still awkward and gawky. Maybe just a little less so.

While growing up I always had seen my sister apply her make up for school and was fascinated by what a transformation make up can do. How is it that you can look sweet and fresh one minute to look like you're going out for a night on the town? I wanted to know this super lady secret. So slowly and gradually, I experimented. Fumbling through the world of mascaras, lipsticks, eyeliners; I was the definition of a hot mess. Most of the time it looked like I drew with a pen underneath of my eyes and had obnoxious lip colors that made me look like a pale and frigid mannequin. How cute, right? I rather not show you pictures or else you may never look at me the same again. I learned my lessons though, like that blue eyeshadow up to your eyebrows was not a good idea or the fact that just doing eyeliner on the bottom half of my eye came off a little strange.

Anyways, since I learned a little bit about makeup since I was 13, here are some of my favorite products that I use on a daily basis no matter the occasion, (and mainly cause these are the things I mainly know how to use).
NYX Stay Matte But Not Flat Powder Foundation in Beige($9.50) - This powder is so silky and smooth and to be honest, it's feels like I'm applying nothing on my face at all. But like magic, all of a sudden my face looks airbrushed and like I had the skin of a 4 year old. It really does it's job. Warning, use with a gentle hand or else you will end up looking like you ran through a beige version of the Color Run.

E.L.F Essential Eyelid Primer in Natural ($1.00) - I used to be the type of girl that was a brand snob when it came to eyelid primers. I swore by Urban Decay's Primer Potion and did not stray from it for two years. But when my tube of that goop broke, causing contents to dry out, I knew I needed to search for a less expensive alternative. That's where I turned to E.L.F. The company is known for making makeup that is extremely affordable. And at a dollar, I didn't have much to lose. And after about a year of using this product, I would say it's pretty awesome. It holds my eyeliner pretty well and keeps on my eyeshadows for a pretty decent amount of time. It definitely doesn't have 24 hour staying power, but it will get you through work day just fine. I purchase this product about every 3 months. So the total cost for an entire year is only $4.00; proving to be a much better deal than any name brand.
E.L.F. Studio Cream Eyeliner in Black ($3.00) - Here's to another of one of my cheap thrills. Gel eyeliner has always been an essential in my cosmetics bag, and for good reason too. Without it, I feel like I don't look awake, or even alive for that matter. Without it, I get an influx of "you look tired" comments a day. Sad that I now depend on a black line above my eye to avoid looking like a corpse. This eyeliner in particular is super easy to apply and ultra smooth as well. The color payoff can be a little bit watery, but if you wait for the first coat to dry, you can always apply a second coat to get a deeper color.

*Here's a tip: when shopping around for gel eyeliners, especially if the container is see-through, look for the product to be touching the entire surface of the container. Gel eyeliners that show gaping in between the container and the product itself are usually liners that are already in the process of being dried out. These types of eyeliners typically "shrink" when they lose moisture, causing harder application due to its dry nature. Try and think of using a sharpie that barely has ink left, that should give you a mental picture.

NYX Slide On Pencil in Jet Black ($8.00) - I'm not too particular when it comes to pencil eyeliners other than the fact that I like my pencils to give a bit less color payoff in general. That may sound strange to any makeup guru, but it's the truth. I only use pencil eyeliner on my bottom lash line and I have grown to notice that the eyeliner stays on longer when the product isn't too creamy or slick. NYX Slide on Pencil does the job well for me. It's easy to apply, and doesn't budge throughout the day. It's truly a perfect fit.

MAC's Blush in Melba ($21.00) - This has to be the priciest item I have on my list. Funny thing is, it was actually a hand-me-down from my sister. Ever since she gave me this, I have been in love with this product. I never really believed in the power of blush before. I used to think that it was unncessary and a waste of money. But my friend, Connie, showed me otherwise. One day, I begrudgingly let her put blush on me. With a quick glance at the mirror, I was shocked. From looking like a corpse to looking gorgeously flushed, I was sold. And ever since then, I have depended on my trusty Melba to give me that boost to my skintone of beige-yellow. It makes me look sunkissed and like I spent all day looking through antique shops and taking scrolls at the beach. When in reality I have been slaving over a paper for 8 hours in the library. Magic, I tell you.
Revlon Super Lustrous Cream Lipstick in Berry Rich ($4.50) - Last but most importantly, one of my favorite lipsticks of all time. When I first started off with makeup, lipstick became an ultimate comfort product. I experimented for a while with different shades and they all didn't work for me at all. On a whim when I was at the store with my mom, I decided to pick up this bad boy. I got lucky. The application was smooth. The color was bright enough to lighten up my appearance. Yet it was dark and subtle enough to wear everyday. If I could only choose one lipstick to wear for the rest of my life, this would be the winner. No doubt about it.

Queen of the Starfish Scene

I'm not going to lie. On a daily basis, I like to dress for comfort. And what I mean by that is, I like to dress very, very "janky". This term according to my oh so favorite urbandictionary.com is defined as,

"a word used to describe something that is sketch/cheap/awkward. Usually used to describe an object. Man, I went to walgreens to get some wrapping paper and it was all janky.

My definition is a tad different. I take that back. It's basically the same. To me, the word encompasses those late nights studying while you wear coffee stained sweat pants, hair not washed and in a bun, with a look that I put together that I would call "Whatever Was On The Floor and Didn't Smell". That's what I usually walk out to class with and go about my day. Not the best representation of myself, but hey, I have clothes on my back. That's what counts right?

With that said, I never really truly express my style the way I want to (out of laziness) and I don't have anyone to blame myself (curse these bad habits that i thoroughly enjoy). But with these photos, I will PROVE that I have "some style".

The look right here encompasses all the quirky things that I like about myself. Side ponytail. Curtain tassel earrings. Obnoxious skeleton socks that are "supposed to be" reserved for Halloween. Jeweled platforms. But all together, these elements seemed to function together, especially in this beaten down laundry room. Why is laundry so expensive!? I'm not made out of quarters, man. Anyways, here is the final look that I guarantee you that you will never see me wear in class. Like. Ever. But only cause I'm lackadaisical at the most.

Up and Coming Starfish: Christine Nguyen

name: Christine N.
age: 21
likes: cats, children novels (come on, they have more imagination wrapped up in 300 pages of 18 point font than a 1000 pages of adult literature, sometimes), getting chocolate-wasted, fashion, fresh laundry, film-making,  writing, & angsty teenage outbursts.
dislikes: running out of hair conditioner, earphones that only work on one ear, 10 page papers, clutter, orange nail polish, & waiting at doctor offices.

I was born and raised in Orange County, CA in probably the most suburban city... EVER. If this gives you a better picture; imagine the time to be 8 at night in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, or Seattle. What's going on in those cities exactly? Things like adventures, diving into the unknown of what the night holds for the inhabitants, new experiences, the lure of the darkness that envelops every individual out on the town with heart beats of mystery. 8 o'clock is only the beginning of every single possibility that could happen, good or bad.

My city? That's right. The only possibility is the possibility of maybe, just maybe, the quiet drone of the sprinklers will stop 5 minutes earlier than usual. Sometimes the only places to go are the parks with sturdy jungle gyms and clean cut grass. And the only crimes that ever seem to happen (thank sweet baby kitten) is teenagers attempting to steal a case of beer from the local Ralph's.

But there is something great about that. I guess where I live, it's up to you to make your own adventures. It's an environment where adventure isn't on the horizon, but rather buried deep under the local Walmart and under the soles of high heels worn by rich housewives. I'm not always proud to call this place my home, but it did shape me to become the "still trying to grow up" adult that I currently am. And the fact that I can walk out of my house at 3 in the morning without the fear of the big, bad world trying to hurt me is... nice. But that is just me rambling on.

In addition to that, I'm also currently a university student majoring in Pre-Pharmacy. The best part of this major is all the studying I get to do and late nights staring at diseases that I hope I never ever, ever, like ever get, all while trying to keep my eyeballs open for the dear life of me. Just joking. But playing around with test tubes and making toxic liquids into even more toxic solids keeps me going.

I'm also a huge food lover. Anything disgustingly unhealthy and greasy is for me. The more meat, the better. I'm the kid ordering at McDonald's with friends that's like "yes, can I have a cheeseburger, a chicken sandwich, a large french fry, large coke, a hot fudge sundae, and oh yeah, those chocolate chip cookies too. What did you guys want?" I can't help it. I can't resist the call of the siren song. Nom nom nom nom.

Last but not least, I really do enjoy creatively expressing myself. I may not be the most talented or unique individual, but its nice to have an outlet to go to when I do feel like I'm those things. From filming, writing, to creating outfits; it just makes me feel happy. It's hard to explain in simple terms. When I'm creating something it's as if I pricked myself with a needle and instead of blood coming out, light bursts out of that wound. And soon enough that small light seems to light up the entire room. Romantically said? I know.

Those are only a few things that is a part of me at the moment. I'm made up of french fries & ice cream with a dash of young perspective and optimism. Just the way I was meant to be.

Welcome to the Starfish Clubb

[ Hi!  hello. What's up?]
Christine here reporting for duty as member of The Starfish Clubb. So what really is this really all about? And to be honest, when I first started to collaborate with fellow starfish, Nicole, I envisioned a place where the both of us could release the Mr. Jekyll Hyde versions of ourselves in a sense. Okay. That sounds a bit crazy. But to sum it up in better terms... this place was created to be a melting pot of our lives as well as our own take on fashion, music, food, and many more starfish activities. You'll get a sneak peak into our ultra boring lives with (hopefully) amazing content & watch us grow from young adults to actual adults as we navigate this crazy journey. So hop on. Sit tight. And get ready for a ride of a lifetime.
